Grades, written feedback and self-assessment: what matters most for a student’s development?

Seven teachers from five secondary schools compared how they assess performance and approaches to learning. They discussed clear feedback, the limitations of grades and explicit criteria. One suggestion was to give feedback before a grade. They also explored why not every activity needs assessment and how students can learn to evaluate their own work.
